Paul Richard Boeding

May 8, 1947-Feb. 6, 2025

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Paul Richard Boeding, 77, of Seneca, Kansas, on Feb. 6, 2025, at his home.

Born May 8, 1947, in Seneca to Edward M. and Mary (Mohan) Boeding, Paul was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He married Marilyn Elizabeth Heiman on Aug. 9, 1969, and together, they built a life centered on love and service. They were blessed with one son, Brian (Julie), and three cherished grandchildren, Andrew, Megan and Lily.

A 1965 graduate of Saints Peter and Paul High School, Paul earned a Bachelor of Business Administration (1969) and a Juris Doctor (1972) from Washburn University. He later completed graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin Graduate School of Banking (1992). His distinguished banking career spanned decades, culminating in his role as President and CEO of Baileyville State Bank, where he served for 32 years before retiring in 2016.

Beyond banking, Paul was dedicated to community service, serving on numerous boards, including the Seneca Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, the Nemaha Valley Health Care Foundation and multiple banking associations. He was also active in finance and education within Saints Peter and Paul Parish and School.

In retirement, Paul enjoyed golfing, genealogy, cooking and traveling with Marilyn to destinations such as Lake Tahoe, Cape Coral, Australia and the Greek Isles. He treasured time with family, especially attending his grandchildren’s activities.

Paul is remembered for his integrity, compassion and leadership. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Kathleen Dowd, Alice Rice and Al Boeding. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marilyn; son Brian (Julie) of Wichita; grandchildren Andrew, Megan and Lily; and brother James (Mary Jane) Boeding of Seneca.

Paul’s quiet strength and unwavering kindness touched many lives. He will be deeply missed.

Scott Welch

July 20, 1980- March 12, 2025

Scott Robert Welch of Moran, Kansas, died March 12, 2025, in a farming accident east of Moran. He was 44 years old. The son of Robert and Cheryl (Thompson) Welch, he was born July 20, 1980, in Iola, Kansas.

Scott graduated from Marmaton Valley High School in 1998, he excelled in football, basketball, track, band and FFA. He was President of the Student Council, Homecoming King, and graduated with honors. He later earned a degree from Allen County Community College and Pittsburg State University in Business Administration — finance.

After graduating high school, he met the love of his life, Amy Dawson. After dating for six years, they married on April 5, 2008. They had four children: Kalli Virginia, Kooper Robert James, Kinley Cheryl and Karly Kay. Kalli Virginia, their infant daughter, preceded him in death on July 21, 2009. 

Besides being a rancher for 27 years and farming, he was the owner of Our Market and Butcher Shop in Humboldt, Kansas, and worked as an Ag loan officer at the Bank of Commerce in Chanute, Kansas. His past work included being a partner in the SEK Stockyards in Gas City, Kansas, and working for the Fort Scott Livestock Association and MoKan Livestock Market. He was a member of the Moran United Methodist Church and enjoyed fishing at his ponds with the kids and attending Kansas University basketball, Royals and Chiefs games with his family.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Kalli Virginia; father, Robert Welch; father-in-law, James Brett Dawson; cousin, Jill Hartman; uncles, Don Welch, Leon and Darrell Thompson; and aunt, Nina Worthington.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Amy Dawson Welch; his children, Kooper, Kinley and Karly; his mother, Cheryl Welch of Moran, Kansas; in-laws, Debbie Dawson and Mike Hofer of Humboldt, Kansas; sisters, Tina Ashford (Steven) of Bonner Springs, Kansas, and Teri Shaughnessy (Shayne) of Iola, Kansas; nieces and nephews, Aaron, Nicole, Emily and Autumn Ashford and Chase, Shelby and Ty Shaughnessy; sisters- and brothers-in-law Shawna Ivy and husband Milton of Humboldt, Kansas, Matthew Dawson of Humboldt, Kansas, and Hali Dawson of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; nieces and nephews Dayton, Broc, Elisha and Alexis; aunts and uncles Judy Welch, Larry Thompson, Sandy Thompson, Nita and Bob Hunt, and Linda and Chuck Heffern.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made out to Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, to go directly to Amy and their children. These memorials may be left in the care of the funeral home.

William Russell (Bill) Docking 

March 23, 1951-March 13, 2025

William R. (Bill) Docking, age 73, died March 13, 2025, at his residence after a long battle with prostate cancer. Cremation has been effected. A celebration of life was held on March 21, 2025, at Cowley College Brown Center.

Bill was born March 23, 1951, in Lawrence, Kansas, to Meredith Gear Docking and Robert B. (Bob) Docking. In 1954, his brother Tom was born, completing the family.

The opportunity to acquire Union State Bank brought the family to Ark City in the middle 1950s. Bill’s formative years were spent in Ark City. The family moved to Topeka in 1967, following Bob’s election to Governor of Kansas. Bob’s father, George Docking, previously served as Governor from 1957 to 1961.

In 1969, Bill graduated from high school at St. Mark’s School of Texas in Dallas. He then attended Kansas University, receiving his undergraduate degree in 1973, his master’s degree in business administration, and his Juris Doctorate in 1977.

While a Kansas University student, he was inducted into the academic honor societies Phi Beta Kappa, Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi. The law school faculty awarded him with the Samuel Mellinger Leadership Award in 1977 for leadership, scholarship and service. He was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

After graduating, Bill moved to Kansas City, where he worked for KPMG and in private industry. He earned certification as a Certified Public Accountant. He has been a member of the Kansas and American Bar Association since 1977 and the Kansas Society and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants since 1979.

In 1983, Bob’s health was failing. Bill moved back to Arkansas City and began his long banking career at Union State Bank and City Bank of Guymon, Oklahoma.

In 1995, Bill and Judy Olsen wed. They have been spouses and best friends ever since. She survives Bill, as does their daughter, Mary Ruth Johnson, and her husband, Jake Johnson, of Wheaton, Illinois. Also surviving is a granddaughter, Katherine Dorothy Johnson. Other survivors include two step-children, Jennifer Worley and Jake Olsen, and six step-grandchildren, Jaden, Ty, Taylor and Tee Worley, and Lara and Landon Olsen. His sister-in-law, Jill Docking, survives.

Bill was preceded in death by his mother, father and brother Tom.

Public service was important to Bill. He served as President of the Kansas Bankers Association, member and Chair of the Kansas Board of Regents and the Kansas Health Foundation. He served for many years on the Cowley College Foundation board and the Kansas University Endowment Association’s Executive Committee.

He was recognized with the Distinguished Alumnus Award by the Kansas University Business School and Ellsworth Medallion by the Kansas University Alumni Association. He felt particularly honored when Cowley College named a residence hall for him.
