Scenes Of Kansas

Above: Nicki Tomlinson of Labette Bank in Osawatomie took this photo of “Big Brutus.” Once the largest electric shovel in the world, it operated for over a decade, increasing coal mining efforts in the region before being retired in 1974. In 1985, it was dedicated as a museum and memorial and can be visited in West Mineral, Kansas, a former coal mining community in Cherokee County.
