K BA’S 2012 BANK LEADERS OF Kansas (BLOK) class recently invested 2 ½ days in Topeka learning about the history, structure and governance of the KBA, as well as the ins and outs of the state legis- lative process currently underway at the Kansas statehouse. BLOK Session I kicks off a year-long educational experience for this latest group of 15 Kansas bankers selected to participate in KBA’s premiere leadership development program. While participation in KBA’s Public Affairs Conference is a centerpiece of BLOK Session I, the 2012 class’s jour- ney actually started the night before the conference began when KBA President Chuck Stones outlined the 125-year history of the KBA. During an opening session held at the KBA office in Topeka, Stones and KBA division leaders outlined the leadership structure of the KBA and highlighted the myriad of services pro- vided by the KBA. In addition to KBA History and Structure 101 with KBA staff members, the 2012 BLOK class also met with vet- eran KBA leaders Dale Bradley, CEO and chairman of the board, Citizens State Bank, Miltonvale; Larry Williams, CEO and chairman of the board, The Halstead Bank, Halstead; and former KBA Presi- dent JimMaag about the vital role of the KBA volunteer leader. Other highlights of Session I included visits to the offices of Kansas Assistant Secretary of State Eric Rucker, State Treasurer Ron Estes, State Attorney General Derek Schmidt, and the Office of the State Bank Commissioner, where Commissioner Ed Splichal and his leadership team provided an overview of the banking department and their role in ensuring safety and soundness for state- chartered banks in Kansas. BLOK class members were also treat- ed to a special behind-the-scenes look at operations at the Kansas Statehouse from the chiefs of staff for Governor Sam Brownback, House Speaker Mike O’Neal and Senate President Steve Morris. The class also had the opportunity to witness the Kansas Senate while in session, and they received a special update on the Statehouse Restoration Project from Jeff Russell, director of legislative services at the Kansas Statehouse.
