20 l e a d i n g a d v o c a t e f o r t h e b a n k i n g i n d u s t r y i n k a n s a s MILESTONES 50 Year Club R OBERT (BOB) GASKILL, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD AT The Bank in Oberlin and Lewis McAtee, chairman of the board at Citizens State Bank and Trust Co. in Ellsworth, were recognized by KBA President Chuck Stones for joining the KBA 50 Year Club in a presentation at the association’s annual meeting held at The Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs in August. They were both awarded a pin and a plaque commemorating 50 years in Kansas community banking. Bob Gaskill entered his banking career in 1962 as an ag and livestock representative for City National Bank, which is now United Missouri Bank. Together with his father, he purchased the Farmers State Bank inWinona, KS in 1963 and worked to grow that single bank into the ten locations it is today. Bob states that he has always believed that the mission of his bank was to help people accomplish their financial goals. Prior to his career in banking, Gaskill served three years in the United States Coast Guard and worked as a professional float trip guide. He also operated a feed lot and pasteurizing operation. He has also been in the cattle/ranching business that started in Colorado and now runs the Turkey Creek Ranch in Wallace County, Kansas. The KBA has valued Gaskill’s service to the banking industry to include serving on the Federal Affairs Committee, Governing Council and Board of Directors. Lewis McAtee began his career in banking as a national bank examiner in 1962. He has since held various positions at Citizen State Bank and Trust Co. including executive vice president and cashier in 1979 and president and CEO from 1992 thru 2004. He has been chairman of the board since 2002. McAtee served in the United States Navy from 1954-57 and graduated from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, Rutgers University in 1970. Besides his family and Citizens State Bank and Trust Co., McAtee has taken great interest in civic affairs and has been an active servant in his community. He has served as mayor of Ellsworth, president of the Chamber of Commerce as well as serving on the board of directors for the Ellsworth Hospital. In 1996 he was named Ellsworth Citizen of the Year. CENTURY OF FAMILY BANKING Two families were recognized at the KBA annual meeting in Colorado Springs this August for maintaining leadership of their Kansas bank in one family for a century or more. The Campbell-Kohfeld-Herman Families T HE FIRST SECURITY BANK & TRUST CO. OF Norton is currently operating with the fifth genera - tion of family leadership. In 1905Charles Campbell was hired as cashier of the bank and elected to the board of directors in 1906. Charles’son-in-lawHaroldKohfeld began working in the bank in 1942 and his son Harold (Chuck) Kohfeld started in 1955 as an assistant cashier. Chuck is the current chairman of the board for the bank. The fourth generation got its start at the bank when Chuck’s son Karl began at the bank in 1987 and his son-in-law, Joe Herman, started in 1990. Karl is currently president of the bank and Joe is the executive vice president. Joe’s son, Aaron Herman, the 5th generation of Charles Campbell, started at the bank in 2007. First Security Bank & Trust has been a leader in their community as they remain involved in economic development councils as well as involvement with various associations and the local rotary club. From the time that Charles Campbell was hired at First Security Bank &Trust Co., the Campbell-Kohfeld-Herman family has provided extraor - dinary leadership in their community and to the banking industry. KBA congratulates them for their formidable leadership of The First Security Bank & Trust Co. for over 100 years. The Reed-Peters-Briggs Families I N 1900 HENRY H. REED WAS AP- pointed to the board of directors for The First State Bank & Trust Co. of Larned. His son H. Mont Reed started working at the bank in 1900 and served in many capacities including president and chairman of the board. Henry Reed’s other son, H. Leon Reed, started working at the bank in 1912 and worked there for 65 years until his death in 1977. H. LeonReedwas succeeded in leadership by Kenneth Peters, who married H. Mont Reed’s daughter, Frances. Kenneth was elected President of the KBAin 1962 and also served on the board of directors for the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Upon Kenneth Peters’sudden death in 1968, his son Reed Peters assumed the top leadership role at the bank. During Reed’s tenure as president he expanded by adding two additional locations in Pratt and Iuka. In 2006, Douglas Briggs, who married Reed’s daughter, Leigh, became Chairman and President of the bank. Rounding out the 6th generation is Taylor Briggs who started working in the Overland Park location in 2010. From the time that Henry H. Reed was first appointed to the board of directors of The First State Bank & Trust Co. of Larned, the Reed- Peters-Briggs family has unselfishly donated their time and energies to the betterment of Kansas banking. They have been active in economic development activities and service organizations. For these exemplary efforts KBA congratulates you for over 100 years of accomplishment in family banking.
