l e a d i n g a d v o c a t e f o r t h e b a n k i n g i n d u s t r y i n k a n s a s 6 D espite the unseasonably cool weather, young bankers from around the state descended on the Little Apple the first week of May for the 2013 YBOK Spring Conference. With forecasted weather below freezing, harsh wind and even snow, YBOK had another record breaking conference. David Kemp was the keynote speaker providing a full morning of education on how to have a “Good to Great Career in Banking.” Starting with the understanding that the banking industry is evolving, David explained that we can reach and relate to new customers under the age of 30 through social networking. Technology should be embraced since 75% of all transactions occurred outside the bank last year. The second emphasis was that we must start doing a better job of cross-selling to current good customers. Silos between departments is no longer an option and we all have to work as a team to capture every opportunity. David coached attendees on managing people and situations. In regard to hiring, he focused on selecting the right person rather than focusing on skills. In this industry, banking skills can be taught and the right personality will contribute to great outcomes. Another key element his training included was developing people. Stating that “Staff development is the hallmark of a good leader,” David emphasized the significance of recognizing the stars within your team and helping them shine. In the spirit of understanding regulatory change, the banker panel focused on various new Reg Z and RESPA requirements. The panel included Michael Needham, SVP (First Security Bank, Paola), Lance White, President & CEO (First National Bank, Wamego), Doug Springer, SVP Consumer Lending (Kansas State Bank of Manhattan), and Brandon Vering, SVP (The Citizens National Bank, Greenleaf). The panel answered questions from moderator, Doug Wareham, KBA SVP Government Relations, as well as several questions posed by conference attendees. In the annual meeting, the 2013 YBOK Board was elected. Jarrod Rowland, Alden State Bank at Sterling, was elected President; Lucas Sawyer, Farmers National Bank, Inman, was elected Vice President; Kathy Schwerdtfager, Bank of Tescott at Lincoln, was elected Secretary/Treasurer; Tyson Oakes, FirstBank of Independence, was elected Region 2 Representative; Aaron Herman, First Security Bank & Trust Co. of Norton, was elected Region 5 Representative; Vance Keller, First National Bank, Syracuse, was elected Region 6 Representative; and Chrisi Norris, Silver Lake Bank, Topeka, was elected to an At-Large position. Congressman Tim Huelskamp, (R) 1st District, was thoughtful in delivering his perspective on the country’s appetite for entitlement reform and other key factors driving our national debt. He gave details of the real impact of the sequester and what kind of real changes we need to make to get to a debt free future. Following the Congressman’s talk, the group received a state legislative update from Doug Wareham. Wareham gave an overview of the session that is about to wrap up followed by the veto session that would be convening soon. Terri Thomas led an interactive session titled, “Learning How to Play Well with Others.” Focusing on perspective, perception and social styling, Terri discussed the differences in how people approach situations. With a prominent focus on the point that we don’t all approach facts alike, she demonstrated that there is no “one reality” because we all have our own perception. Wrapping up the education program was an entertaining presentation from Mark Mayfield titled “Momma Told Me There’d Be Days Like This.” With a humorous approach, Mark described how people create stress and he gave techniques for how to deal with it.
