Lee Wetherington, ProfitStars, introduced a thought provoking presentation on payment systems and how mobile payments are changing before our eyes. The industry disruptors and three party networks that remain exempt from the Durbin Amendment may unhinge basic services away from banks if the industry doesn’t evolve as necessary. Removing the friction at point of sale is a concept that some retailers are already developing. Now is a time of real opportunity to move away from traditional financial programs and move toward an “invisible” payment system that banks can thrive on. Lee gave multiple examples that left everyone contemplating their options. The conference wrapped up with a presentation titled “Cyber Security – Threats and Solutions” from Dr. Patrick Engebretson, Secure Banking Solutions. In the world of cyber-attacks and computer hacks the financial industry is knee deep in penetration testing and vulnerability assessments. Dr. Engebretson gave examples of the typical sequence plan that skilled cyber attackers follow and discussed the vulnerability we face when we mistake compliance for security. He delivered a technical program followed by demonstrations of how cyber-attacks are successful. The 2014 Technology Conference provided a place for Kansas bankers to see what’s new, discuss ideas and look to the future of the industry. KBA’s 2015 Bank Technology Conference & Showcase will be held February 10-11 in Topeka.
