T HE CHARM OF OLD TOWN IN WICHITA drew a crowd for the 2014 YBOK Spring Conference on May 1-2. The conference was opened with an interactive Facilitation Workshop by Kenneth Friedel of Kennedy and Coe, LLC. Facilitation skills include understanding how to engage participants and utilizing strategies to manage dynamic discussion. Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt provided a presentation on elder abuse in Kansas. The state doesn’t have a large capacity to prosecute white collar crime because the majority of state resources are used for investigation and prosecution of criminal cases where crimes are committed on people. There is a division of responsibility between local, state and federal authorities for these crimes. With this limitation in mind the AG explained the process that should be used to report suspected elder abuse. He went on explain that the state does have a robust consumer protection division that actively investigates and litigates cases that fall under that area. Attendees were presented with the story of a man working successfully in the financial services industry who crossed the line when faced with a critical decision. John Borbi explained how easy it was to make the decision to break one policy and then rapidly slip into a point of no return. Borbi served 2 years in a federal penitentiary for stealing money from clients and now he actively shares his ethics lesson with professionals in an effort to help them clearly define where the line should be drawn. An active veto session of the Kansas State Legislature prevented the appearance of Governor Sam Brownback. In his place the Governor sent newly appointed Kansas Bank Commissioner Daryl Schuster. The commissioner described the function of the office and his goals that included a reduction of unnecessary regulations. Laurie Guest raised the energy level of the room with her closing presentation titled “Life in the Espresso Lane.” Using humor and an enthusiastic style, Guest gave practical advice on the role your own thoughts play in your success. Her fast paced presentation provided tips on how to stay energized and engaged in your work while maintaining joy for your job.
