Friday morning began bright and early with the Annual Bob Brown Golf Classic on the scenic West Course at the Broadmoor Golf Club. The morning air was crisp for the 7:30 shotgun start. Winners of the golf tournament traveling trophy sponsored by Central States Capital Markets, were Mike Sobba, Nick Sobba, Gary Yager, and John Lehman. Their score was an impressive 55, which was 16 under par! The spouse/guest breakfast program was held in the main ballroom while the golf tournament was being played. T. Marni Vos, President of Laughter’s Echo, Inc., regaled the group with her refreshing, thought-provoking, motivational humor. Kicking off Friday afternoon was Jack Vonder Heide of Technology Briefing Centers. He presented Technology Trends: A CEO’s Blueprint to the Digital Universe. His talk focused on ten technology trends and ten pieces of advice for the attendees, including an interactive piece that allowed attendees to see how their smartphone uses technology to track their usage. Following this presentation was Jeffrey Marsico from the Kafafian Group, who presented Things Community Bankers Should Know in 2015 and Beyond which highlighted the state of Kansas’ financial performance and a market overview. Friday evening concluded with the KBA Leadership Reception, followed by an Italian buffet dinner and musical entertainment by Philip Myers and Trio. Saturday morning began with a buffet breakfast and the golf awards. Skills contest winners were Mike Beck, Drew Olberding, Bob Siebert, Tom Hintz, Bill Lundy, Bruce Schriefer, Cameron Cooper, Greg Johnson, Karl Hougland, Mike Cearley, and Ryan McLaughlin. The Century of Family Banking award was presented to Farmers Bank and Trust, Atwood, and Legacy Bank, Colwich. The 50 Year Club Award was presented to Leon Drouhard from Farmers and Merchants State Bank in Argonia. For additional detail and photos, please see page 14. The Annual Meeting was conducted with a review of the previous year by Kelly Mason. New officers inducted are: Bob Leftwich, Chairman; Jim Hoskins, Chairman-Elect; Ron Johnson, Treasurer; and Kelly Mason, Past Chairman. As Bob Leftwich assumed his new role he gave a forward-looking speech about the year ahead. Joel Leftwich, Staff Director of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry addressed the group with a report on federal programs being targeted for review by Committee Chairman Senator Pat Roberts (R – Kansas). Hot topics under review include reauthorizations in child nutrition (school meals and the WIC program), grain inspections, livestock mandatory price reporting, and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, along with Country of Origin Labeling (COOL). Joel also touched on the 2016 Senate election forecast, and noted that it will be a tough election year and that we will likely see many tight races. Rounding out the 2015 CEO Forum was Dr. Ed Seifried, who is an economist and professor of economics. Dr. Ed spoke about the economic outlook for 2015 and beyond. He gave a recap of the Greek economic crisis, gave a comparison of Germany’s economy versus Greece, and spoke about the impact on the U.S. from the Greek crisis. Dr. Ed shared four essential economic concepts including Zero Boundary, LSAP (Large Scale Asset Purchases), Normalization, and Reinvestment Phaseout. He ended his talk with why education matters and how the U.S. is rapidly moving towards energy independence.
