Special Agent Todd Jourdan gave a tag team presentation with three factors present in every case and examples of cases in Kansas. They described how and what to monitor and discussed the significance of the suspicious activity reports that banks are required to submit. The program also featured Senior Economist Dr. Jason Brown from the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City with a regional and state economic update. He reported that consumer spending and private investment accounts for most of the growth in the region. He also noted that auto and student debt have increased while mortgage debt has leveled off. It appears that Kansas employment growth lags the nation but this is expected as labor markets approach full employment with little unemployment. The education component of the conference closed with an uplifting talk from Ron Freeman. Knowing your goal is essential as you plan your day. He discussed the significance of knowing how to skillfully use your knowledge and recommended learning how to meet someone else’s needs. He walked through a process to create a fortress that allows you to play to your strengths and affirm the things you do well. Use mental repetition to practice the way you want things to go and pay attention to how you respond to the outcome. He left the group with increased awareness of physical, intellectual and relational gifts. Despite the declining weather conditions the group transitioned into the evening portion of the program with Aggieville Olympics. This event was designed around networking and fun with teams competing in games such as pool, darts, and goldfish races, in 9 locations. There were 18 teams participating in the Olympics and when they were about half way through the skies opened up and several inches of rain fell in a short time. Following a power failure that discontinued the games, the group met in the final destination for prizes and a pulled pork meal. The 2015 Fall YBOK Conference will be remembered as the night the lights went out in Aggieville. K-State Athletic Director John Currie spoke about lessons in leadership and his experiences during his tenure at Kansas State University. FBI Special agent Scott Gentine provided examples of fraud cases in Kansas. Ron Freeman had all eyes engaged on him as he discussed being the best you can be. YBOK President Kathy Schwerdtfager, Bank of Tescott in Lincoln, welcomed bankers to the conference.
