B LOK SESSION one convened at the KBA office on Tuesday, February 2, 2016. The first session has a central focus on getting to know each other, getting to know KBA and learning about the state legislative process as well as state agencies that touch the financial services industry. A planned ice breaker session is always good for a laugh or two and successfully assists the classmates in getting to know one another. KBA President Chuck Stones provides an overview of KBA history and structure and the KBA leadership team introduces their department functions and processes. The second day of session one kicks off at the Topeka Country Club with an interactive program modeled after the old Schoolhouse Rock, I’m Just a Bill. The morning is packed with information on the state legislative process with examples of legislation that KBA has been heavily involved with. The class later transitioned to the Public Affairs Conference, also held at the Topeka Country Club. The Public Affairs Conference included attending sessions given by Kansas Governor Brownback, ABA President Rob Nichols and a Legislative Panel consisting of Kansas House and Senate leadership. They also participated in the Legislative Reception later that evening. Day three of BLOK session one started bright and early with a Volunteer Leader Panel made up of former KBA Executive Vice President Jim Maag, former KBA Chairman Kent Needham, CEO of First Security Bank, Overbrook, and current KBA Chairman Bob Leftwich, CEO of Impact Bank, Wellington. The panel was moderated by Chuck Stones. The class was invited to attend the first part of the KBA Board meeting before transitioning to the Office of the State Bank Commissioner. The visit to the OSBC included an overview of banking in Kansas that included information on bank audits and recent historical information on the financial services industry in the state. A legislative panel discussion over lunch included Senator Jeff Longbine and Representative Jim Kelly. The panel was moderated by KBA EVP- Government Relations Doug Wareham. The discussion included topics such as a typical day at the statehouse and why they chose a political path in addition to their other responsibilities. BLOK session two will be held in conjunction with the KBA Tri-State Leadership and HR Conference in late March.
