It’s also mind-boggling when one pauses to consider the technological advancements implemented over those same 70 years that allow today’s agricultural producer to steadily produce more food and fiber, while maintaining and improving the health of precious Kansas soil. Just as conservation and tillage practices have dramatically changed since 1945, so have the recognition categories for KBA’s Conservation Awards program, which now honors agricultural producers in six different categories. Those categories are soil conservation, water conservation, energy conservation, water quality, wildlife habitat, and windbreaks. Last year (2015), 190 different farmers and ranchers in 84 different counties were recognized by the KBA and local Kansas bankers for their role in preserving and improving our state’s natural resources. It’s important to note the support and cooperation KBA receives from Kansas State University’s Agronomy Department and local extension agents that help promote this important recognition program. We are also grateful for the important role and support received over the past 70 years from County Conservation Districts. We would also be remiss if we failed to mention and thank the thousands of agricultural bankers that have stepped up to serve as the County Ag Key Banker for their respective county. The support and leadership provided by these Key Bankers has always been and always will be the key to success for KBA’s Conservation Awards program. Thanks to everyone that has helped build and maintain this proud tradition of recognition of our state’s best environmental stewards. Kansas farmers and ranchers have always been our state’s best environmental stewards. KBA’s Conservation Awards program has proudly recognized that fact for 70+ years.
