He was hired as a teller at Commercial State Bank in Bonner Springs in 1963. Bill went to work for Norm Dawson at Manufacturers State Bank in Leavenworth in 1964, where he worked for two years. In 1966 he moved to First State Bank & Trust where he became a shareholder and was elected as a member of the Board of Directors. He was appointed President in 1979. In January 1993, Bill was elected Chairman of the Board. Under his leadership, First State Bank & Trust opened the first branch bank in Kansas, after branch banking was authorized in the state. Construction began on a new facility in Basehor, Kansas, in 1989 and it opened in January 1990. The bank has grown from $17MM in assets in 1979 to over $260MM in assets today, and now has seven northeast Kansas locations. First State Bank & Trust remains the only locally owned, independent bank headquartered in Leavenworth County and is fully committed to the communities it serves. H ARRY WHEELER IS A GRADUATE of Rockhurst University with a bachelor of science degree in Finance. He is also a graduate of the Graduate School of Banking at Madison, University of Wisconsin, and a graduate of the National Graduate Compliance School –American Bankers Association. In 1966, Harry began his banking career at Firststar/Mercantile Bank/ MidAmerican Bank, where he remained until 2000. Harry is Past Chairman at the Kansas Bankers Association. He has also served as a Board Member of First Security Bank and Past President of BankAdministration Institute, KCMO.
