Many bankers, guests, and KBA staff were invited on stage to witness and participate firsthand in Mr. Kargas’ astounding demonstrations! On Saturday morning, the group enjoyed a bountiful buffet breakfast in the Rocky Mountain Ballroom. The championship team, consisting of Mike Beck, Lynn Mayer, Mike Ewy and Charles Derby, was awarded the JimMaag Golf Scramble trophy sponsored by Central States Capital Markets. In addition to many flight prizes, 11 golfers won skills contest prizes provided by hole sponsors. Recognized for his contributions to Kansas banking over the past 50 years and receiving the 50 Year Club award was Mike Berkley, Bennington State Bank. The Century of Family Banking award was presented to the First National Bank of Girard and the Beezley family. The Annual Business Meeting and Election of Officers was held and saw the gavel being passed from Jim Hoskins as our outgoing KBA Board Chairman to Ron Johnson, our newly elected chairman. Other officers elected were Chris Donnelly, Chairman-elect and Lynn Mayer, Treasurer. Concluding the conference was Dr. Lacy Hunt who spoke on the topic of, “The New Economy.” Dr. Hunt expounded on several factors impacting our current and future economy including the velocity of money, productivity of debt, increasing operating costs, and declining profit margins. He noted that proposed tax cuts will not be nearly as effective at stimulating the economy as everyone hopes, and that over the next five to six years he projects that the U.S. will need to borrow one trillion dollars to cover losses of the Affordable Care Act. Ernie Goss, Economist from The Goss Institute, spoke on Trump, Trade & the Regional Economy. Ken Burgess, ABA Chairman-elect, provided a Washington Update. Lt Col. Robert Darling delivered a talk titled, "A Lesson in Crisis Leadership." Dave Brownback, Citizens State Bank & Trust Co, Ellsworth; Bob Leftwich, Impact Bank, Wellington; and Mike Stevens, Centera Bank, Sublette. Jim Hoskins was pinned as Past Chairman by his wife Buggy.
