L E A D I N G A D V O C A T E F O R T H E B A N K I N G I N D U S T R Y I N K A N S A S 18 Frost Retires from American State Bank and Trust Company Bruce Frost, Senior Vice-President of American State Bank and Trust Company has announced his retirement effective July 1. For the past two years, he has specialized in agriculture and commercial lending, according to Don LacKamp, President and CEO of American State Bancshares, the parent company of American State Bank. Frost has been in banking for more than 40 years. In 2016, he was awarded the annual Kansas Banker’s Pioneer Award in recognition of his professionalism and commitment to agricultural banking. After retirement, he will continue to serve as the president of Sunflower Land and Trust, a non-profit that works to protect the unique lands and wildlife of Kansas and will also become president of Rolling Hills Country Club. Frost and his wife Peggy will continue to reside in Wichita. Judy Stork Retires from the Office of State Bank Commissioner After nearly 39 years of service to the Office of the State Bank Commissioner, Judi M. Stork has retired from her position as Deputy Bank Commissioner, effective July 25, 2017. Judi has served the Office of the State Bank Commissioner since September of 1979. We thank her for her service to the agency and to the State of Kansas, and recognize and appreciate the wealth of knowledge and experience she brought to the role. While we regret to see her leave, we extend our best wishes to her in her retirement. BBOK Hires Priest in its Financial Services Group Bankers’ Bank of Kansas has hired Jason Priest as Loan Review Officer for its Financial Services group. Priest will perform independent loan reviews for banks around Kansas who hire Bankers’ Bank Financial Services to assess their loan portfolio. Priest formerly worked for the Office of the State Bank Commissioner as a financial examiner. “As credits are getting more complex, our bank partners have a greater need for an independent analysis of their loan portfolio,” says Calvin Coady, BBOK President/CEO. “Hiring examiners with years of experience and specialization, like Jason and Todd Schoenhofer, has become crucial for banks in today’s environment.” Priest has been examining bank safety and soundness for more than a decade. In his new role at Bankers’ Bank Financial Services, Priest will use the knowledge he’s acquired to help banks proactively develop best practices and risk management strategies. “Jason’s background, coupled with his honest, approachable demeanor is a great fit for our bank customers,” says Todd Schoenhofer, Credit Review Services Manager. New Banking Institute at Fort Hays State Names Alan Deines as its First Director Fort Hays State University has announced that Alan Deines will serve as the first director of the Robbins Banking Institute in the W.R. and Yvonne Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship at Fort Hays State University. “Alan brings more than 37 years of banking experience to the position with a unique perspective on the banking industry and its needs for the future,” said Dr. Mark Bannister, dean of the Robbins College. “In the course of his career in the industry, Alan has worked with hundreds of banks, providing management, counsel and advice,” said Bannister. “Alan is exactly the type of person Fort Hays State University was looking for. We want a leader who has substantial experience with the banking industry as well as vision for the future of this vital business sector.” Fort Hays State offers the most extensive banking curriculum in Kansas and is one of the few universities in the country to offer banking classes both on campus and through distance learning. Deines will bring his expertise to the classroom and will add to existing faculty expertise. “This is an opportunity for me to give back to an industry and a state that has treated me very well over the years,” said Deines. “I hope to leave a legacy of good people leading strong institutions throughout Kansas and beyond.” He said the institute’s mission has three parts: one, to produce high-quality, highly sought-after graduates who will be able to meet the needs of financial institutions; two, to serve as an education and training resource for people already at work in the financial industry; and, three, to be an information resource for management and boards of directors. The Robbins Banking Institute, located in McCartney Hall on the FHSU campus, will recruit students, help them understand the substantial career opportunities the banking industry in Kansas offers, and prepare them for those opportunities, said Bannister. Deines will also reach out to bankers to make them aware of the value that the Robbins Banking Institute can offer their organizations as they hire new employees and seek to upgrade the skills of current staff members. He will work with the banking community to establish additional resources and develop an internship program and career path for the benefit of the university’s students and Briefly...
