The Robbins Banking Institute was formed in 2016 with the generous assistance of W.R. and Yvonne Robbins of Farmers Bank and Trust, Great Bend. The vision of the institute is to provide education, training opportunities and resources for both traditional students and those individuals currently working in the industry who want to improve their skills. Mike Brand Named to Board of Directors of Union State Bank Eric Kurtz, Chief Executive Officer, recently announced the election of Mike Brand, co- founder of Brand Plumbing and a successful real estate developer, to the Board of Directors at Union State Bank. “Union State Bank is fortunate to be able to bring the experience and expertise that Mike offers to our Board of Directors. Mike is a quality individual and entrepreneur who will help us navigate the banking environment very well,” said Kurtz. Mike Brand was born and raised in Colwich, Kansas. He is the second oldest of six children to parents Melvin and the late Rosella Brand. Mike graduated from Andale High School in 1976 and attended Wichita State University just before entering the plumbing business with his oldest brother Marc, and his two younger brothers Tony and Max. This partnership quickly evolved into Brand Plumbing, an established business for over 35 years. Mike’s dedication to plumbing has resulted in several leadership roles, including 10 years on the Sedgwick County Plumbing Board. In 2007, Mike and Marc purchased Cooks Heating and Cooling, and together their experience and expertise have grown the company to over 50 employees. Mike’s dedication to this community is also reflected in his knowledge and success in real estate. Dating back to the mid 1980’s, he has built and maintained over one hundred rental properties across Wichita. In the last five years, Mike has led the development of three multi-million- dollar apartment buildings. The most recent project includes an upscale apartment complex and retail development called Uptown Landing that will soon be at the Northeast corner of Hillside and Douglas. Mike married his wife Rene in 2003. He has four children Shawn (wife Megan), Erica (husband Chad), and his two youngest boys Alex and Mikey. Mike is a proud grandpa to George, with another grandson to arrive in September. Mike enjoys golfing, fishing, hunting and spending quality time at Table Rock Lake with his family. Michael J. Shonka Joins American State Bancshares Board of Directors American State Bancshares, the holding company for two Kansas banks with branches in more than a dozen Kansas communities, has announced the appointment of Michael (Mike) J. Shonka to its Board of Directors. The announcement was made by Donald R. LacKamp, American State Bancshares President and CEO. With a long and distinguished career in corporate management, Mr. Shonka currently provides strategic planning and performance consulting to companies principally in the financial and aerospace industries. His vast experience includes 14 years as executive vice president and chief financial officer of Cessna Aircraft Company (a Textron, Inc. company), and 20 years in banking, including eight years as chief financial officer of Fourth Financial Corporation. He has served as a director for a number of public, private equity, and family/employee owned businesses, and in key posts on audit, compensation, special litigation, and independent directors’ committees. In addition to his seat on the board of American State Bancshares, he currently serves as a director for The NORDAM Group and JR Custom Metal Products, Inc. “Mike is a highly-respected voice in the financial services community and we are extremely pleased to welcome him to ASB’s board of directors,” said Mr. LacKamp. “We believe the depth of experience he brings to our organization will be exceptionally valuable as we continue to grow and look for new opportunities to serve the financial needs of consumers and businesses.” Mr. Shonka holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Northern Colorado and a Master of Science degree in accounting from the University of Kansas where he currently serves as a member of the Advisory Board for the School of Business. He is also a graduate of several leadership and advanced management programs conducted by some of the nation’s leading business schools. His professional involvement includes membership in the National Association of Corporate Directors, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Financial Executives Institute.
