Abernathy explained the current strategy to fix language in current legislation and discussed key issues on the Hill this month. Chris Nichols, CenterState Bank, presented a talk titled, “2018 Biggest Risks for Community Banks.” Driving beyond the commonly accepted risks of cyber, interest rates, concentrations and liquidity, Nichols addressed the “risk of relevance.” Using case studies, he demonstrated growth strategy and the affect it has on capital and efficiency. He also outlined formulas for success that create profitable products and profitable customers. He spent some time discussing the cost and value difference for mobile banking vs. branch banking. The conference closed with an intriguing presentation by former Chief of CIA Counterintelligence James Olson. Mr. Olson discussed the war on terror and the need for intelligence to combat the continued threats faced around the world. Never has he felt the world was a more dangerous place than it is now. He detailed the rigorous training process that he and his wife endured before embarking on a 31-year career as international agents for the CIA’s clandestine service. He took attendees into the world of intelligence as he experienced it. Most of his assignments are still top secret but due to the declassification of one case, he told the story of an actual operation he was involved in while assigned to a US embassy in the former Soviet Union. The 2018 Economic Outlook and Risk Management Conference will be held at the Double Tree Hotel in Lawrence, on November 7-8, 2018.
