If employees are allowed to connect personal devices to the office network, make sure you know what those devices are and who owns the device, as much as you are able. When possible, implement technical policies to prevent unpatched or jailbroken devices from connecting to the network. Consider providing a separate network for employee devices. When you do this, you can rest easier because your customers’ sensitive information isn’t sharing the same communication channels as your coworker’s unpatched health tracker. Install security patches on the IoT devices you manage on the network as soon as possible. If you aren’t sure how some of your IoT devices get updates, today would be a good time to figure that out. The IoT at Work The internet is an incredibly helpful tool and the IoT can help us be more aware of our health, better at communicating, and more efficient in the workplace. While it comes with its own set of problems, the more we can share awareness, the more prepared we will be to take our business into the future.
