The YBOK Board welcomed attendees to an early arriver’s reception at the hotel’s lounge and patio. The conference welcomed 100 young bankers for education and networking. YBOK President Tyson Oakes, FirstOak Bank, Independence, opened the conference with welcoming comments and introductions. He invited KBA’s EVP-COO, Doug Wareham, to say a few words. Wareham was encouraging in his statement about being involved in promoting and building the banking profession through advocacy and other association activities. He reiterated that by utilizing KBA’s training, consulting service and insurance products, they make the KBA stronger and that KBA is their association. The first speaker was Lonny Geiman, President of Bandura Plus Organizational Performance. He asked the group what they were thankful for, what’s working, what’s not working and if it is time for a change. Do you light up the room when you enter it or leave it? As attendees pondered these questions, he shared his message of connecting and communicating. Positive communication and conflict leads to trust. The keys to connecting he said, “stay humble and hungry; bring your hands, head and heart.” None of us want to believe employees in whom we have invested our trust are taking advantage or outright stealing from our banks, but the truth is many financial institutions do fall victim to employee theft. Tammy Placzek, Vice President of One Beacon Financial Services, gave several examples of dishonest employee losses. She shared how they are typically structured, how they were discovered and additional tools to help prevent them from occurring in the first place. She reiterated that sadly, those who steal are often the most trusted and longest tenured employees in the bank. A recurring request from YBOK members is a CEO panel to discuss current trends and expectations. This panel was made up of two Kansas bank CEO’s: Dave Brownback, Citizens State Bank & Trust Co., Ellsworth and Kent Buer, First Bank Kansas, Salina. The panel was asked questions submitted by YBOK members and included topics such as what are the qualities of a virtuous bank employee, the pros and cons of employee teleworking and the keys to surviving bank examinations.
