l e a d i n g a d v o c a t e f o r t h e b a n k i n g i n d u s t r y i n k a n s a s 22 Kurt Knutson, Chairman-elect Kurt Knutson is the Founder, Chairman and CEO of Freedom Bank in Overland Park. He is a commercial banker with 35 years of banking experience. In 2006, he led a group of local business leaders to form Freedom Bank, which serves privately held companies throughout the greater Kansas City metropolitan area as well as the southern Johnson County residential community. Knutson was appointed by Governor Brownback to the Kansas State Banking Board in 2011, re-appointed in 2013 and re-appointed again in 2017 for a term expiring March 2019. He served as Chairman of the State Banking Board from 2013-2016. In 2013 Knutson was elected by his peers to serve on the KBA board where he served through 2016. He was Chairman of the State Affairs Committee until his term expired in July of 2018. He is also a member of the KBA Federal Affairs Committee. Outside of banking, Knutson serves on the Board of Clements Worldwide based in Washington, D.C. Clements is a leading provider of insurance solutions for expatriates and international organizations. He is actively involved in the southern Johnson County community and resides in Overland Park with his wife Leanne. They have two grown children; his daughter Katie attends the University of Kansas Nursing School and son Jack attends the University of Kansas. Knutson is a graduate of the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in marketing. Jayne L. Coleman, Region 1 Representative Jayne Coleman is the President and Director for Kendall State Bank in Valley Falls, where she has been employed since 1971. She started there in the eighth grade as a teller and emptying the bank’s trash cans. Jayne then worked there part time through high school and college and then full time in 1979. She worked through the ranks until being named the first woman president in 1998 and CEO in 2006. She graduated from Washburn University in 1979 Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Business Finance. Coleman serves on USD 338 Site Council, Valley Falls Economic Development Board, vice president of Jefferson County Health Department Advisory Board, financial chairman of Valley Falls United Methodist Church, Valley Falls Booster Club, past president of Valley Falls Chamber of Commerce, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Northeast Kansas Board representative of the CBA. She has served on KBA’s Bank Management Committee and is a graduate of the KBA/NBA Schools of Banking Bank Compliance School. Jayne and her husband Gary, who is EVP and Senior Lender at Kendall State Bank, reside in Valley Falls and have three grown children. Christopher Coleman and his wife Katie live in Chicago, IL, and they have two children, James and Claire. Laura Polite and her husband Antione resides in Lawrence, KS, and have two children, Ayana and Milah. Laura is Vice President/Cashier at Kendall State Bank. Brian Coleman and his wife Whitney live in Lenexa, KS, and they have two children, Rowan and Ramsey. In her spare time, Jayne enjoys her grandchildren, reading and antiquing. Craig Heideman, Region 2 Representative Craig Heideman serves as the President and CEO of Kaw Valley Bank in Topeka, where he has worked since 1997. Prior to that, he was a commercial lender at Farmers State Bank of Circleville. Heideman earned a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics from Kansas State University. He is also a graduate of the Graduate School of Banking in Colorado and the KBA’s Bank Leaders of Kansas program. Heideman has been active in the KBA with service on the State Affairs and Bank Management Committees. He and his wife Deb, have three children, Nathan (22), Ryan (21) and Jensen (15). In his free time Heideman enjoys Kansas State University athletics, golfing and fishing. Brad Zimmerman, Region 3 Representative Brad Zimmerman is Senior Vice President at the First National Bank of Scott City where he has worked since January 2018. In his previous employment, Zimmerman worked as a Community Bank President and Senior Vice President/Lending. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Fort Hays State University. He has been active in the KBA and currently serves on the KBA’s Kansas Ag Bankers Division Board of Directors and previously served on the KBA Lending Committee. He is a 2015 graduate of the Bank Leaders of Kansas program. Zimmerman and his wife, Marla, live in Scott City and have three children, Lance, Loren, and Lynette. He looks forward to serving on the board and contributing to the KBA and the industry. Dave Brownback, At-large Representative Dave Brownback is the President & CEO of Citizens State Bank & Trust Co., Ellsworth, where he has been employed since 1979. Prior to that he worked as an examiner in the Office of the State Bank Commissioner. He attended Ottawa University and the University of Kansas where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business and is a graduate of the Graduate School of Banking in Colorado.
