l e a d i n g a d v o c a t e f o r t h e b a n k i n g i n d u s t r y i n k a n s a s 10 2018 YBOK FALL CONFERENCE – 10 TH ANNIVERSARY T he YBOK Fall Conference was held September 6-7 in Mulvane. At this year’s Spring conference, the YBOK board made a commitment to incorporate a charitable activity at all YBOK conferences moving forward. To honor that pledge and to kick off the event, the board presented a $1,500 check to F.R.O.G. Diner in Mulvane, a mission that provides free meals to anyone in the community. This was a great way to start the conference and show that bankers are committed to the communities they serve. Sara Girard, YBOK President and President of Central National Bank in Topeka along with Chris Donnelly, KBA Chairman and President/CEO of Bank of the Prairie in Olathe, opened the conference and welcomed everyone to the 10th anniversary occasion. Both spoke about the importance of this conference for the industry and how it helps prepare the next generation of leaders. The kick off speaker was Rory Rowland, an international trainer and consultant specializing in communications and technology issues, gave a high energy presentation on leadership vs. management. Next up was Brent Bundick, a Senior Economist in the Economic Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, who gave a national economic outlook. Lee Wetherington, Director of Strategic Insight for Jack Henry & Associates, brought the group back after lunch to give his insightful presentation: “Future Freak: 5 Emerging Techs with Near-Term Impacts.” Next was State Treasurer Jake LaTurner who gave a talk on Servant Leadership for the Next Generation. He discussed being the youngest statewide official in the United States and how he takes his role as a public servant seriously. LaTurner shared how he has revamped the office to be more efficient and his role on the Pooled Money Investment Board (PMIB). The closing keynote was motivational speaker Chris Norton, author of The Power of Faith When Tragedy Strikes and founder of the Chris Norton Foundation. He revealed his secrets to overcoming the most challenging obstacles and recognizing the great power within all of us.
