The group reconvened for the final general session of the day, entitled “Getting, Keeping and Building: Relationship Strategies for Lenders” presented by Sean Payant. He encouraged attendees to read the book Start with Why by Simon Sinek. By looking at the why, how and what of what we do, each bank can move from typical to remarkable. Sean provided a case study for a bank that he had worked with showing how this type of thinking can have a significant positive impact. The evening concluded with a networking reception. The conference continued Wednesday morning with a networking breakfast, followed by a general session presented by Rayleen Pirnie of RP Payments Risk Consulting. She presented “Cyber Attacks: Not Just an IT Problem.” She shared a long list of challenges banks face when it comes to cyber security and followed it up by giving participants many suggestions to shore up their own cyber incident response plans, building their CIR procedures, escalation procedures, and how to communicate with customers, employees, and your board throughout the process. She encouraged banks to start their CIR plans now, collaborate with other financial institutions, create quick reference guides for staff, test plans as realistically as possible, and join associations like InfraGuard to stay abreast of the ever-changing threats that all banks face. Doug Wareham led a panel discussion on Financing Alternatives with panelists Robert White from Kansas Farm Service Agency, Wayne Bell from Small Business Administration, and Steve Radley from NetWork Kansas. The conference concluded with NFL Referee Walt Coleman sharing his motivational talk on “Turning Boos into Cheers” as he regaled the group with his own experiences during the last 30 years of working in the NFL. This high energy presentation had several important messages that can be carried across nearly any line of work, and had the audience laughing frequently! Lending Committee Chairman, Brian Eilert (First National Bank, Beloit). Dr. Matt Roberts (Kernmantle Group) reviews the current state of the oil, gas, and diesel markets. Chairman-elect Kurt Knutson (Freedom Bank, Overland Park) and Doug Wareham (KBA President/CEO). Michael Kennalley and Frank Basgall (Stinson Leonard Street Law Firm) prepare to give their presentation on lender liability. Alison Trapp (Sageworks, Inc.) provides a timely discussion on creating, using and controlling credit risk ratings.
