In 1987 the bank relocated its home office to Great Bend and now has branches in Albert, LaCrosse, Bazine, Kinsley, Downtown Great Bend, Overland Park, Olathe, and Larned. Larry served as Chairman of the Board for 22 years, and the bank’s attorney and Director for 50 years. He retired from the Board on January 31, 2019, due to health reasons, and passed away on February 23, 2019. He will be greatly missed, but he left quite a legacy. W. R. Robbins, CEO and President of Farmers Bank & Trust, quoted, “Imagine this ride. Larry joined the board when the bank was approximately $4 million in size, and at closing of 2018 it was $825 million. Such asset growth was realized because of Larry’s dedication, guidance, and outstanding leadership. He witnessed many changes over 50 years. With Larry’s help and the rest of the team, the bank’s been able to progress from manual ledgers to mobile banking. We now look forward to the future!” Robbins served over 47 years with Larry on the Board and shared, “Larry and I had an amazing partnership. We were not only business partners, but lifelong friends.” Honoring Former Kansas Congressman and KBA Board President Richard “Dick” Nichols The Kansas Bankers Association (KBA) and State of Kansas lost a dear friend and true champion with the passing of Richard “Dick” Nichols on Thursday, March 7th. The collective heart of the KBA family goes out to Linda Nichols and the entire Nichols family, several of whom were with Dick at his McPherson home at the time of his passing. Dick Nichols life is a testament to devotion, service and servant leadership to his family, his colleagues, his state and his nation. His lifetime of service began with his service in the U.S. Navy, including a tour aboard a minesweeper in the North Atlantic in the 1940’s. That same sense of duty led Dick to serve his industry and his state in prominent leadership roles. He was a steadfast champion of the Kansas banking industry serving as KBA Board President in 1986-87, while also serving as President/CEO of Home State Bank & Trust, Co. in McPherson. Dick led Home State Bank & Trust until he was elected by is fellow Kansans in 1990 to represent Kansas’ 5th Congressional District as their U.S. Representative. While we honor Dick for his many accomplishments, we also thank him for reminding us all to be warm, friendly and encouraging to each other regardless of the time, place and setting. KBA honors Dick Nichols for the extremely positive impact he had on this organization, this industry, our state and everyone he and Linda met along the way.
