May/June 2019 17 l e a d i n g a d v o c a t e f o r t h e b a n k i n g i n d u s t r y i n k a n s a s KANSAS BANKERS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS T he Kansas BankersAssociation (KBA) is pleased to announce the recipients of six scholarships awarded by the Kansas Bankers Educational Foundation (KBEF), a 501(c) 3 corporation created and operated by the KBA. Three scholarships have been awarded to children of Kansas bankers, who met specified criteria. An additional three scholarships were awarded to recipients who are currently enrolled in one of three Kansas colleges/universities who offer banking- specific degrees and/or concentrations. COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS - $1,000 Each Emily Astle – Henry W. Bloch School of Management University of Missouri – Kansas City (UMKC) Emily is a junior studying finance and accounting where she serves as Director of Membership for the UMKC chapter of the accounting and finance honor organization, Beta Alpha Psi. Emily participated in the 2019 CSBS community banking case study competition as a member of the UMKC team, which finished in the top six in the nation. She maintains a 4.0 GPA. Mariah Rippe – Robbins Banking Institute Fort Hays State University Mariah will be a senior majoring in finance with a banking concentration. She got her start in the banking industry in 2013 as a part-time teller and has since advanced to a loan/ administrative assistant position that has allowed her exposure to many different departments within the bank. Mariah’s career goal is to complete her banking degree and become a loan officer or financial officer with her current employer. Christopher White - Byron G. Thompson Center for Integrity in Finance and Economics, Benedictine College. Christopher will be a senior studying finance and economics. Upon graduation next spring, he plans to sit for the CPA exam and subsequently pursue a career in banking. Christopher is a Georgian Fellow, a Thompson Fellow, a member of the Student Alumni Board and currently serves as a financial reporting intern at Murphy Hoffman Company in Leawood. CHILDREN OF KANSAS BANKERS SCHOLARSHIPS - $1,000 Megan Sample The daughter of Mike Sample, Bank of Tescott, Megan will be a Junior at Kansas State University with an accounting major. Upon graduation, she plans to use her accounting degree within the banking industry. Sheldon Booe The son of Tammy Booe, Bank of the Prairie, Olathe, Sheldon will Graduate from Kansas State University in December 2019 with a business finance degree. He plans to make banking his career. Winston Meyer The son of Alan Meyer, State Bank of Bern, Axtell, Winston will earn his degree in finance at Kansas State University in the spring of 2020. After gaining some experience in a larger bank, Winston’s goal is to return to his hometown to continue his career in banking.
