l e a d i n g a d v o c a t e f o r t h e b a n k i n g i n d u s t r y i n k a n s a s 12 A ttendees from 15 states gathered at the Sheraton Crown Center in Kansas City, Missouri on May 8th through 10th for the 40th annual MOKAN Trust & Financial Services Conference. Kicking off the program on Wednesday was Stana Martin speaking on the topic of “Interpreting Long Term Care.” Duane Lee of Cannon Financial Institute shared his opening keynote session, titled “Elements of an Effective Investment Policy Statement.” Afternoon breakout sessions included “Stan the Annuity Man” Haithcock speaking about “Annuities: The Good … The Bad … The Brutal Truth!”, in addition Duane Lee spoke on the topic of “Discretionary, Directed, Delegated Trustees, and Trust Protectors,” and Phoebe Papageorgiou from the American Bankers Association gave a Washington Regulatory and Legislative Update. Rounding out the afternoon, the KBA Trust Division held their annual meeting, along with the election of officers. Janice Peters from Guaranty State Bank & Trust in Beloit was honored for her year as president of the division with a new watch and a plaque, and she became the immediate past president, as well as MOKAN Treasurer. Joe Karnes from Central National Bank in Lawrence stepped into the president’s role, Susie Roberts from Bank of Labor in Kansas City became president-elect, and Tyler Peachey from Peoples Bank & Trust Company in McPherson was elected as the secretary/treasurer. Mark Kennedy from Citizens State Bank & Trust Company in Ellsworth was elected as our newest director. Upon adjournment of this meeting, all MOKAN attendees spent time at an evening reception where they had the opportunity to network with each other, as well as more than 45 business partners/vendors. Thursday morning began with two general sessions. The first was by Mark Zinder, entitled “What Happens Next? Looking Backwards to See into the Future.” Following this, Denise Appleby shared her topic of “IRA Mistakes and How to Fix Them.” Immediately after lunch, the audience was treated to a riveting session by Lt. Col. Robert J. Darling, United States Marine Corps (Retired) as he shared his experiences MOKAN 2019 Your 2019 KBA Trust Board!
