l e a d i n g a d v o c a t e f o r t h e b a n k i n g i n d u s t r y i n k a n s a s 14 T he 2019 Trust Conference was held at the Manhattan Hilton Garden Inn. This year’s program once again hosted an interactive trade show with 19 vendor booths and a phenomenal speaker line-up. Attendees were welcomed by Trust Division President Joe Karnes. The conference opened with John Tousley of Goldman Sachs, who shared his thoughts and analysis on the economy and capital markets. This high- level session shed light on the strength of the economies in the U.S. and overseas, the trade war with China, the potential for geopolitical distractions and 2019 positive earnings growth globally. Doreen Welsh, U.S. Airways flight attendant, took participants on the emotional journey of that fateful day that became known as The Miracle on the Hudson. Doreen likes to say that had one person perished during that crash, it would have been known as the U.S. Airways Flight 1549 crash. Because of the heroic deeds of five crew members — who had never met until that day — it was a miracle! The next session, “Hoodlums to Hackers: How Criminals Get Your Information and What You Can Do to Stop Them,” presented by Jeff Lanza, retired special agent of the FBI, provided non-technical ways to prevent the most recent threats involving identity theft, cyber fraud, social networking scams, tax refund fraud and payment fraud. The group was given takeaways on what to do to mitigate and prevent today’s hoodlums and hackers from victimizing on a personal and financial institution level. There were two breakout sessions for attendees to choose from: “Ethical Considerations When Multiple Professionals Serve a Mutual Client,” by Stewart Weaver, Foulston Siefkin LLP, and “A Fiduciary Perspective to Managing ILIT and TOLI Risk,” by George Whitelaw III, The TOLI Center. The KBA Trust Division celebrated its 100th Anniversary Thursday, Oct. 18, with a dinner event at the Liquid Art Winery in Manhattan, KS, following the first day of the conference. In attendance at the evening event was Lieutenant Governor Lynn Rogers, who presented KBA Trust Division President Joe Karnes with a proclamation signed by Governor 2019 KBA TRUST CONFERENCE — TRUST DIVISION CELEBRATES 100 YEARS! Jim Lewis and Peter McHugh (Central States Capital Markets, Prairie Village). Steve Christenson with Ascencus provides the group with current industry savings trends. Joe Karnes (Central National Bank, Lawrence) accepts the proclamation from Lieutenant Governor Lynn Rogers. Kansas State University Quartet performs at Liquid Art Winery. Thomas Medlin (Farmers National Company, Omaha, NE), Ken Springer (Farmers National Company, Lee’s Summit, MO) and Julie Hower (Farmers and Drovers Bank, Council Grove).
