In Kansas Banking Paul Haskins Adair Paul Haskins Adair, 74, long time Atchison, Kansas banker at Exchange Bank & Trust, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2019, in Overland Park, Kansas. Paul was born April 17, 1945, at Highland Park, Illinois, the son of John Augustine and Jane Mary (Haskins) Adair, Sr. He graduated from the Cranbrook School, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan in 1963. Paul earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, in 1967. Paul worked as a branch manager for Dun & Bradstreet, Topeka, Kansas, from 1968 before moving to Atchison in 1973. He began his banking career at Exchange National Bank in 1972. He was serving as chairman of the board of directors and as senior trust officer. Dennis Eugene Affolter Dennis Eugene Affolter, 69, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019. He was born May 23, 1950, in Clay Center, Kansas, the son of Don and Marilyn Affolter, and grew up on his parent’s farm near Morganville, Kansas. Dennis graduated from Clay Center High School, where he was selected to all-state teams in basketball, football and track. He received a football scholarship to Emporia State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in May of 1973. Later, he completed the graduate program in banking at the University of Wisconsin. Dennis had a successful career in the banking industry for over 40 years, before retiring in January 2017 from Landmark National Bank. Jim Birkbeck James (Jim) Samuel Birkbeck, 79, Holton, passed away on November 27, 2019, at Stormont Vail in Topeka, Kansas. Jim was born on August 5, 1940, to Howard and LaVerne Birkbeck in Burlington, Kansas. Jim worked his entire 55-year career in Kansas community banking. He spent the first seven years of his career at banks in McPherson and Kansas City, Kansas. In 1972, he and his young family moved to Holton where he began employment with Denison State Bank. In 1977, Jim and Mary Lou purchased majority ownership of the bank and he was named bank president. He served as president and CEO until 2014, and he served on the bank’s board of directors since 1972, the last 42 years as chairman. He was president of Denison Bancshares Inc., the holding company of the bank. He served on several bank and organization boards. He was a past director and chairman of Bankers Bank of Kansas. He was recognized for 50 years in banking by Kansas Bankers Association. He and the bank received a Community Leader Award from Federal Home Loan Bank-Topeka in 2017. Anderson Woods Chandler Anderson Woods “Andy” Chandler passed away October 29, 2019. He was born in Wichita, Kansas, on Jan. 21, 1926, to Charles Q. and Laura Alice (Throckmorton) Chandler. Anderson’s early life was spent in Wichita, enjoying a close-knit family, boy scouting, being a part of the “College Hill Gang,” and graduating from Wichita East High School, where he was a National Honor Society member. Andy attended Wichita State University in 1943 and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II at the age of 17. He hoped to be a pilot but was assigned as a flight engineer on B-17 heavy bombers. He was honorably discharged from active duty in November 1945 and enrolled at the University of Kansas (KU) in January 1946. While at KU, he was a member of Delta Tau Delta National Social Fraternity, and Scabbard and Blade, a college military honor society. He received the Summerfield merit scholarship and graduated with honors from KU in 1948 with a degree in business. Having served as an ROTC cadet captain, he went on to receive a commission as Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. In 1948 Andy married Patricia Hinshaw, his high school sweetheart. The newlyweds moved to Sterling, Kansas, where, inspired by his father’s leadership in banking, Andy joined the Farmers State Bank. While in Sterling,
