L E A D I N G A D V O C A T E F O R T H E B A N K I N G I N D U S T R Y I N K A N S A S 10 Paul H. Viets Obituary Paul H. Viets of Independence, Kansas, died peacefully at his home on April 11, 2020. Paul attended St. John’s College in Winfield, but soon returned home to marry Sharon Afton Clayton of Independence on June 2, 1951. He worked for Viets Implement Co., the local John Deere Agency, until 1957 and then attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Following graduation, he was the Wichita office manager for the United States Fidelity & Guaranty Co. In 1965, Paul rejoined his father in the Viets Implement Co., where he continued until the sale of the agency to the O’Malley Family in 1973. Paul joined the Board of Directors of Citizen National Bank in 1970 and became President after the retirement of Al Sewell, Sr., a position in which he continued until the merger of the bank with Commerce Bancshares in 1998. He was president of the Kansas Bankers Association from 1991-1992. Exchange State Bank Celebrates a Milestone Anniversary and Retirement Exchange State Bank, St. Paul, celebrated the 50th anniversary of Vice President and Cashier Robert Schoenhofer in January. Schoenhofer, who was honored with a reception at the bank, began his 50 year tenure on January 1, 1970. Schoenhofer also serves as a BSA officer and loan officer, and handles all bank investments. In addition, he serves on the following committees: loan, IT, investment, asset liability, and compliance. Schoenhofer announced his retirement at the end of April and was recognized by the Kansas Bankers Association during a bank reception attended by bank directors, officers, employees, family and his many customers.
